Fitness and Technology: Using Tech Devices Wisely

With the booming of technology nowadays, you get to wonder sometimes, "what good it has to bring my life?"

Having discovered this app My Fitness Pal from the App store made me realize that technology can be very important if you know how to fully utilize it.

The App helped me monitor my diet and actually enabled me to lose 16 pounds in just one month.

Now if you'll compare what I would have spent in the gym with what I have to pay for buying a smart phone, I can say its worth the 1800 plan (Monthly payment for a premium gym a actually averages from 1500 to 2000).

My Fitness Pall is an app that helps users monitor their calories. According to research, reducing calorie intake by 500 can enable a person lose 1 pound per week!

Biking Diaries: When I Decided to Bike Last Saturday

It was supposed to be just an ordinary Saturday. But it turned out to be an extraordinary day when I decided to put my gears on and ready my tools for a biking adventure.

From Biking Diaries

The challenge was to know whether I, as well as my bicycle, can survive more than three hours of travel from Dasmarinas to Victoria Avenue going to Laguna.

From Aguinaldo Highway, I biked across Anabu Road to reach Salitran Road. Then, I took Jose Abad Santos Road going to Molino-Paliparan Road, and finally arrived on Daang-Hari Road.

The later road, it seems, is biker-friendly. There are bike lines for bikers and motorists seem to respect that exclusive area.

When I reached the intersection along Daang-Hari Road, I decided to turn right to Daang Reyna Road and bike up to Victoria Ave.

Already reaching my target destination, I finally decided to stop and take the route back home.

The trip is fun, overall. Fellow bikers greeted me delightedly when I came across them, maybe because of the same passion we share for biking. I also saw great views and some funny road signs. I took time to take pictures of them.

When I returned home, I had a feeling of accomplishment. I'm happy that I have proper conditioning and that my bike setup is good enough to last the travel.

Which do you prefer? Running in an oval or on the side of the road?

Running, albeit a simple sport, presents athletes with several choices to make. From the kind of shoes to wear, semi-barefoot or standard running shoes, to which place it is best to run, runners usually have their individual preferences.

Lucky for me, for the latter,I have access to several venues for jogging. Living in a place near the highway and a memorial park, I can always opt to run at path walks or in an oval depending on my mood. Having said that, if I were to chose which is the best course to run on, I have to say that both have their own plus-factors, as well as drawbacks.

On the side of the road

From Life's Rhythm Lived On

There is a certain feeling of excitement in running side-to-side with several vehicles. And if you are the adventurous type of athlete, you should enjoy the different places you can travel on your feet. You also wouldn't likely to feel tired because of adrenaline rush, with you knowing that you have to continue running until you reach your destination. The drawback? There is always the danger of you being hit by vehicles passing by or stepping on sharp objects.

The ease of measuring your progress is one of the key benefits of running in an elongated place. As you develop your endurance, you'll have this sense of accomplishment, knowing that you have outrun yourself. One of the few disadvantages of running in an oval is the possibility of being fed up for the reason that you have been running on the exact location several times already.

Whatever your choice is, what matters most is the benefits that running can give to your body. Nonetheless, always remember to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings.

Backtrack: Why high school basketball is still the best

From Life's Rhythm Lived On

Looking at some of my old photos, I came across this picture from my high school days. It shows me sitting with my fellow varsities, taken years ago when I was still playing basketball in high school.

It is one of the most memorable experiences I have had in my lifetime. As much as high school years have been meaningful to me, being a part of our school's athletic program has its own space in my special memory box.

From Life's Rhythm Lived On

Here are some of the reasons why, whatever level of basketball a person may have played at, HS basketball is still the best:

1. Unlimited access of the basketball court
2. Presence of all school mates and classmates, even the school principal whenever the team has a game
3. Having your own quarters and lockers, a privilege that a few students enjoy
4. Having the excuse to wear your favorite rubber shoes even if you are in school uniform
5. Being able to stay inside the university longer than your fellow students during school days
6. Scholarships and allowance
5. Exemption for CAT
6. Grade bonuses in PE
7. Being able to learn (at a young age) important lessons that make you realize that great knowledge can be acquired not only inside the classroom but also outside of it.

One of the important lessons I learned during my stint as a HS varsity is how to accept failures and how to use them as motivation to train harder and learn more in order to accomplish much greater things not only in athletics but also in life.

I also learned that when you do the things you love, you will have a sense of purpose and direction in life.

Assembling a mini gym at my room

Going to the gym is one of the best ways to stay in shape and healthy. Nonetheless, it often requires huge amount of time and money, commuting and paying for membership fees. So when I found a way to fix my room so I can put up a "mini gym," I was so exuberant and excited to work out.

From Life's Rhythm Lived On

Putting up an area for weight-lifting also cost a lot, but it is a good investment if you want to have a weight-lifting program that you can maintain for a long time. For my mini gym, I listed the amount of money I spent overall:

1. Bench: 3,000 pesos
2. Barbell: 900 pesos
3. Dumbbell: 600 pesos
4. Medicine Ball: 400 pesos
5. Jumping Rope: 300 pesos
6. Plates: 250-350 pesos (each)
(I included a medicine ball and jumping rope for cardiovascular exercises.)

Finding an area to place the weights is very tricky, considering the width of the barbell and the length of the bench. A brilliant idea is to maximize the purpose of the bench so it can serve both as a bench press equipment and an ordinary bench. And what a better way to accomplish this than by putting it in front of the television? Well, that's what I did.

Boxing training for physical fitness

Five years ago, I have managed to find a way to hang a punching bag on my house's ceiling, and after taking up thousands of blows, it still hangs tight up there--thanks to the effective knot tying techniques I learned over the years.

From Life's Rhythm Lived On

By the way, it is my second bag. The first one got damaged already, and I had to replace it with a higher quality brand.

Doing punching bag training is one of my favorite exercises. It is a full-body exercise and is great in building core muscle strength and flexibility. Coupled with other boxing drills, you can build functional muscles too and burn a lot of calories just by spending 30 minutes boxing.

Mount Batulao, Batangas 2012: My First Climb

"Mountain climbing is fun," the streamer from the mountaineering society read, encouraging students to try mountain climbing. A freshman then, I had no clue about what groups like these are into, so I browsed different pictures of their mountain trips.

Viewing several high-altitude shots, I asked myself, "what's with mountains that encourages them to engage in such a physically challenging activity?" Not knowing the answer to this question then, I was never encouraged to try mountaineering.

Lost times... If I only knew how fun and fulfilling it is to be on the mountain summit viewing nature at its full expanse, then I should had joined the club.

Although I could not bring back those times, I realized it is never too late to try mountain climbing. And that's the nice thing about the sport -- it doesn't matter how old you are or whether you have experience or none, for as long as you have enough endurance to walk for several hours, you are ready to go.

Trip to Mount Batulao, Batangas

Last month, I did my first climb at Mount Batulao, Batangas, together with some of my churchmates. It took us only an hour to reach the destination, good thing we left Dasmarinas early at 5:30 am. The place was easy to locate and very accessible -- you just need to look for the Evercrest Golf Club Resort along the way.

From Mount Batulao 2012

After we entered the resort, we searched for a parking space. And finding one was not a problem, for there were villagers who offer parking spaces for visitors in exchange for a little "tip."

From the parking lot, we walked for 45 minutes (more or less) to reach the foot of the mountain. There are two trails to choose from once you reached the beginning mark. The first is the "old trail," which is longer but less steep, and the other is the "new trail," which is shorter but steeper. We decided to take the new trail going up and then the old trail going down, as we rather do a steep climb than descend on a difficult angle.

From Mount Batulao 2012

Mt. Batulao has 12 peaks, and each one has its own level of difficulty. For me, the real challenge started on peak 10, wherein we started walking on narrow paths and climbing on steeper parts of the mountain.

From Mount Batulao 2012

I have thought for a while then whether it would be possible for us to reach the last peak. From peak 10, which took us two to three hours before reaching, the succeeding peaks seemed to be miles away from where we were standing.

Although challenging, I never doubted myself. “This is my first climb and I have to reach the summit and take a jump shot pic up there,” I told myself.

We managed to climb 11 peaks before finally reaching peak 12, the summit. Up there, there is a feeling of euphoria. For a while, you forget all your worries and fears, and feel that you’re the king of the world.

From Mount Batulao 2012

If I only knew way back in college that mountaineering is this fun, I would have climbed several peaks already. Nonetheless, climbing Mt. Batulao is a good start for several more climbing adventures.
